Geomeasure: GIS and Scripting for Measuring Morphometric Variability

This paper presents Geomeasure, a methodological tool developed to recover typometric information with a twofold objective. First, to speed up the process of gathering data by automatizing the way in which it is recovered. Second, it adds higher accuracy and the possibility of re-measuring archeological items without further directly interacting with the piece. Based on a combination of R scripting with GIS features, Geomeasure is at the time able to automatically gather 125–130 typometric variables per archaeological item, with the only input of vectorized photographs. Neural Correlates of Visual versus Abstract Letter Processing in Roman and Arabic Scripts

In alphabetic orthographies, letter identification is a critical process during the recognition of visually presented words. In the present experiment, we examined whether and when visual form influences letter processing in two very distinct alphabets (Roman and Arabic). Disentangling visual versus abstract letter representations was possible because letters in the Roman alphabet may look visually similar/dissimilar in lowercase and uppercase forms (e.g., c-C vs. r-R) and letters in the Arabic alphabet may look visually similar/dissimilar, depending on their position within a word (e.g., [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text] vs. [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text]). This chapter contains a description of the proposed agent-based model, using the well-known “Overview, Design Concepts and Details” protocol. The model was implemented in NetLogo and is based on the same two types of agents—citizens and law-enforcement—as in Epstein’s model, but “citizen” agents have one subtype (“activist”) used for implementing network influence effects. The salient aspects of the model description are centered on the submodels for the risk perception, the expression of hardship in terms of value-sensitive relative deprivation, endogenous legitimacy feedback and network influence effects, which provide extensions to Epstein’s model. A wiki task for first-year university students : the effect of scripting students' collaboration

Abstract This study investigates the effect of a collaboration script - i.e. a set of instructions to improve collaboration between learning partners - for a wiki task. Participants were first-year university students in Educational Sciences ( N  = 186) collaborating in groups of five during a three-week period to create a wiki on peer assessment in education. Two conditions were contrasted: a scripted and a non-scripted condition. The effect of scripting was measured in four ways (questionnaires, log-file analyses, group product scores, and individual pre–post-test scores). This study examines student teachers’ collaborative learning by focusing on socio-cognitive and socio-emotional monitoring processes during more and less active script discussions as well as the near transfer of monitoring activities in the subsequent task work. The participants of this study were teacher education students whose collaborative learning was supported with a designed regulation macro script during a six weeks environmental science course.
